Topic: Lower Saluda Greenway Update & Saluda Shoals Park Improvements

Guest Speaker: Mark Smyers, Executive Director, Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC)

ICRC oversees Saluda Shoals Park. Smyers was employed as the Park Director in August of 2015 and was later selected as the Executive Director of the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission in 2017.  Previously, he worked for FMWR (Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) at Fort Jackson, where he served as the Outdoor Recreation Director for 4 years overseeing Fort Jackson’s outdoor recreational programs, park lands, equipment check out facility, hunting and fishing, 32 RV/camping sites, 60 suite hotel, 14 cottages/cabins, and multiple special events for Soldiers and Families.  Prior to that, Smyers served as the Director of Recreation for Spartanburg County Parks where he was responsible for special events, 50+ programming, youth development, outdoor recreation, and 4 recreation centers.

Smyers, who grew up in upstate NY, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism from Clemson University and his Master of Science in Sports Administration from the American Public University.

He and his wife, Katie, have lived in the Irmo area for the past several years.  They have two children, Austin (11) and Ashton (9).  Austin attends Irmo Middle, and Ashton attends Irmo Elementary.

ICRC exists to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the district through the development of recreation programs that promote a lifestyle of wellness, physical activities, and cultural experiences for all ages.  This is accomplished through an amazing staff and 5 destination parks and facilities, Seven Oaks Park, Crooked Creek Park, Saluda Shoals Park, Melvin Park, and Michael J. and Mary Meech Mungo Park.
