Kid’s Day of Lexington brings families together for day of fun

Midlands Anchor – For the 17th year, Kid’s Day of Lexington
proves to be another family fun event centered on enriching children’s lives in Lexington. This year was bigger and expanded thanks to the newly built
Icehouse Amphitheater.

Based in downtown Lexington, starting at Virginia Hylton Park and stretching along Maiden Lane towards the amphitheater, kids ran from vendor to vendor collecting goodies, eating treats and even learning from a variety of business professionasl. The goal of Kid’s Day is to create
a better community by educating and caring for families.

There were definitely plenty of fun-filled activities including bounce houses, cheerleading demos and a dance-off from mascots including Lexington Blowfish’s
Blowie, Cocky, Tiger and Belle and the Beast. Additionally, young people helped paint a mural to be hung in Palmetto Chiropractic Center’s office,
according to Michelle Watt of the Blessketeers. This giant mural is a colorful collage of phrases and pictures painted by the kids at Kid’s Day. Watt’s
group offers painting parties and decided to offer up a canvas mural at the event.

Children were also able to send handwritten postcards to troops courtesy of Operation Thank You, a small non-profit based out of West Columbia. Brian Bohlman,
President, said there are at least a couple hundred cards to be shipped out with care packages to our men and women serving our country. The young
participants enjoyed putting their personal touch on the card while helping the troops.

Archery was another hot sport with kids – and adults – learning to take aim. Hot Spots Archery Games provided on-the-spot training and guidance. They offer
events for a variety of groups.

While the event was a day of free fun, any and all proceeds benefits the Dickerson Center for Children and Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter. As for next
year’s event, the planning will start up again with visions of 2018 and prospective vendors gearing up for another day of fun.
