May 22, 2024 | Posted By: Nina Glisson

Earlier this spring, the Chamber promoted the Doris Burkett Scholarship to seniors at Lexington County School District One.  The board met and selected a recipient for this year’s $5,000 scholarship.

Each year the Lexington Chamber & Visitors Center administers the Doris Burkett Scholarship to a deserving student from Lexington School District One.  The late Doris Burkett served as the Executive Director of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce from 1982 to 1994 and was a graduate of Gilbert High School. A scholarship fund was established in her memory by her family and has been administered by the Lexington Chamber since 1995.

In May, the Chamber presented the $5,000 scholarship to Jayden Gunnells of Pelion High School.  Jayden was recognized as an exceptional young man who has not only demonstrated great dedication and leadership but also has shown remarkable resilience in both his academic and athletic pursuits.

As a three-sport athlete, participating in baseball, basketball, and football, Jayden demonstrated incredible sportsmanship that inspires younger students. He was honored with the Most Improved Player award and the Team Leader award which is a testament of his hard work. Jayden’s selflessness also shines through in his volunteer work at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He devotes his time to helping those in need within his community.

He plans to attend Midlands Technical College to pursue his dream of becoming an electrical lineman.  Jayden wants to use his skills to help improve living conditions in low-income housing in Pelion as well as in other areas in Lexington County.

The director of counseling commented that, “Jayden has shown an unwavering commitment to his education and personal development.”

His mother, Sheneke Gunnells, was present at the awards ceremony along with District One representatives, including Sean Bishton, Principal at Pelion High School, Renee Padgett, Career Specialist at Pelion High School, Anna Marie Green, Board Chair, Lexington One School District, and Dr. Gerrita Postlewait, Lexington One School District’s Superintendent, just to name a few.

Congratulations Jayden!
