A Message from the SC Department of Commerce: Reflecting on South Carolina’s Year of Success

December 12, 2023 | Posted By: Nina Glisson

To our valued partners,

Throughout 2023, South Carolina’s diverse business, economic development, education and state leadership communities collaborated to align the Palmetto State for long-term economic resiliency and success. These partnerships helped identify business and economic trends across global markets where South Carolina can apply its resource network to make a tangible impact.

From launching a virtual electric vehicle industry hub for the growing industry to a historic $2 billion investment announcement by electric vehicle manufacturer Scout Motors, South Carolina’s EV industry continued to expand in 2023. Governor McMaster announced the powerSC working group to support South Carolina’s resilient energy future, and the SC Nexus for Advanced Resilient Energy was named one of 31 nationwide federal Technology and Innovation Hubs (Tech Hubs).

Over the past year, S.C. Commerce worked closely with its partners to develop a strategic framework that will guide the agency’s direction moving forward. Coupled with the framework, S.C Commerce will publicly launch its new brand at the inaugural Governor’s Economic Summit Jan. 29, 2024. This refreshed identity and direction will reflect modern priorities while supporting the agency’s mission of creating economic opportunities to increase choices for all South Carolinians.

S.C. Commerce would like to extend its deepest gratitude to all economic development partners for making 2023 another successful year of growth. Together, we contribute to one of the nation’s best places to do business while supporting the state we call home. We wish you a joyful holiday season and wonderful new year.

Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III and Deputy Secretary of Commerce Ashely Teasdel
